Kenyans on Sunday woke up to the news that world champion Julius Yego came second in the Rio 2016 Olympics men javelin finals. The 27 years old Kenyan injured himself in the second throw, sadly forcing him to pull out of the competition.
Before the injury, Yego was leading with a season’s best 88.24m from his first attempt and was followed by Germany's Thomas Rohler with 87.40m in the first attempt.Unfortunately, Yego, who’s famously known as “The YouTube Man” suffered an ankle injury that forced him out of the competition. Thomas Rohler then struggled to beat Yego in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th attempts (85.61m, 87.07m and 84.84 respectively) before finally surpassing Yego in the 5th attempt with a 90.30m making the 24 year old German the winner.
Yego, despite the injury came second with a Silver medal.
Kenyans led by Deputy President William Ruto and fans across the world took to social media to congratulate and wish Julius Yego a quick recovery.
Here is what they had to say:
“Tremendous performance by Julius Yego, who defies injury to clinch silver in the men’s javelin as Margaret Wambui wins bronze in the women’s 800 metres final at the Rio Olympics. You have done us proud.” ~D.P WILLIAM RUTO~

“Although you ended your Rio 2016 campaign in tears after retiring after the fourth round having established the lead with an opening attempt of 88.24m, Yego, you made history after winning Olympics silver in the men Javelin despite being forced out of the final injured. Congratulations Julius Yego, my favorite athlete of all the time.” ~ ARAP MUTAI~
“In my observation, we have done very well in #Rio2016 despite the challenges. From Julius Yego's ticket hitch to his injury yet going on to win Silver in only a single throw. Disappoinment in 5,000m men and 1500m men. Kenya is blessed. “ ~ MURAGU KERÙ~
“Remember there was a Silver lining to all these. You have attained what no Kenyan has ever done. We tend to forget that your achievement is historic..For those asking what happened Julius Yego won the Silver Medal. The 1st Kenyan Javelin thrower to win a medal in the Olympics. Congratulations 'YouTubeMan'” ~GEOFREY WACHIRA~
“JULIUS YEGO is Champion. He tried only once and got an injury which made him not to try again. The winner tried 6 Good times and Yego Won silver with only that first and Final trial. Congratulations” ~ Josphat Koech K”CONGRATULATIONS JULIUS YEGO!
