BEWARE! These are the tricks used by MPESA FRAUDSTERS

A few weeks ago, I received a call from a new number. The strange caller identified himself John calling from Safaricom customer care. That alone, claiming to be a Safaricom agent immediately made me to rule out his credibility; he was a CONMAN.
However, I decided to engage him anyway after all I knew I would outsmart the idiot. This is how our conversation went:

CONMAN: Hello, Naitwa John nakupigia kutoka Safaricom. Naongea na nani?
ME: Mimi ni Samwel Mosonik nigo Bomet nyumbani
CONMAN: Asante sana bwana Samwel Mosinik ningependa kukuuliza maswali machache
ME: Hakuna shida ulisa tu...
CONMAN: Samwel ulizaliwa mwaka gani?
ME: eeeeh naendin bibti naen (1959)
CONMAN: Usijali mzee nakusaidia sasa hivi. Fanya hivi tafuta simu tofauti na yako ndio nikupigie nayo
(So I flashed him using my Airtel line and 5mins later, he calls)
CONMAN: Samwel Mosonik sasa fanya hivi, kwa simu yako enda mahali imeandikwa MPESA ukifinya hapo unaona nini ya kwanza?
ME: Ngocha mimi naweka macho nne unachua macho ya wasee habana ona msuri.
CONMAN: Hakuna shida mzee
ME: Baas Naona ‘Send money’
CONMAN: hapo mzee sitaki utume pesa yoyote sawa? Finya hapo unaona nini?
ME: Anasema Enter ‘Phone number’
CONMAN: Vizuri kabisa bwana Samwel Mosonik. Sasa hapo sitaki uweke number ya simu. Weka hii serial number nakupatia. 00254790848134 na ufinye OK. Inakuuliza nini mzee?
ME: Anasema ‘Enter Amount’
CONMAN: Hapo kwa amount usiweke pesa weka hii CODE. 0010530 na ufinye OK Inakuuliza nini?
ME: Inasema weka PIN.
CONMAN: Sasa bwana Samwel hiyo PIN ni siri yako na haufai kuambia mtu yeyote hata mimi mhudumu wa Safaricom.
ME: Hiyo mimi nachua kapisa
CONMAN: Sasa weka PIN yako ya MPESA kish ufinye OK, OK. Yaani OK mara mbili haraka haraka!
ME: Wee mzae hiyo ufala yenu tumezoea sawa! Mimi naitwa Ben Keter leo umepata wrong number. Unataka kunirusha 10k hivo?
CONMAN: Kwenda fala hii! k***nyoko!!unafikiria tunakula nini hii January toa kimbelembele yako hapa!
(Call Disconnects)
Looking at those instructions he gave me, it's clear that had I been a victim of his fraud, I would have lost Ksh 10,530 to a phone number +254 (0)790848134
Please note that conmen are too smart. To avoid raising any suspicion of you losing your money, they use "Enter this serial number" instead of "Enter this phone number" and "Enter this Code" in place of "Enter amount."
Secondly, there is this other trick they have invented lately. You receive this text saying
"Tafadhali nitumie pesa kwa hii number, ile number ingine iko na shida"... So because you were in a hurry and you just remembered that you had promised to send some money to your uncle, then you simply assume it is him (your uncle) asking you to send the money to this other line.
Please beware!
1. Do not accept any instructions from anyone claiming to be calling from Safaricom. Remember, Safaricom only call you using the number 0722000000
2. Do not send money before you confirm it's the right number (call the number) & right person.
3. Do not give out any personal details (e.g. phone number, ID number, Date of birth ) to a stranger.
4. If a stranger asks to use your phone to call someone so that he/she can send money (via your line), DO NOT ACCEPT. You never know where the money is coming from. If for instance, it was from a case of robbery, it is you who will be in trouble since it's a line registered under you that received the money!
5. Majority of Kenyans who fall victims of the fraudsters are mostly our friends and family in the rural homes. If you can, kindly take time to enlighten them.....
