If President Uhuru Kenyatta is reelected in the
2017 general elections, it means he will retire in 2022 aged 61. However, if he
fails to recapture the presidency in 2017, he will be forced to retire at the
age of 56.
Whether he recaptures the presidency or not,
Uhuru will be the first ever youngest Kenyan president to leave office. The big question is, is Uhuru ready and willing to retire at an early
age of 61? What happens to his political future thereafter?
Mzee Jomo Kenyatta was the leader Kenya since
independence in 1963 until his death in August 22, 1978. Jomo first served as the Prime Minister then later became the
first president of the Republic of Kenya. He died at the age of 87.
His immediate successor H.E Daniel Arap Moi who
was born in 1924 retired in the year 2002 at the age of 78 while the third
president H.E Mwai Kibaki retired in 2013 at the age of 81.
DP William Ruto who will be seeking to succeed
his boss in 2022 will retire as president at the age of 66 if he is elected
president and subsequently reelected in 2032. Ruto, who was born in
1966, will be 66 year old when he retires. Even if Ruto becomes a one term president, he will still retire in 2027 at the age of 62.
If Raila Odinga who is now 71 is elected
president in 2017 it mean he will retire in 2022 at the age of 77. His CORD co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka will retire at the age of 69. Moses Wetangula will be 66 years old in 2022 and will retire at age 71 in 2027 that is if he is elected president in 2017.
Looking at the all these former presidents and
future possible presidents, it is clear that when H.E Uhuru Kenyatta retires from office, he will become the
youngest former president of Kenya.
